About & Contact

Questions about the data, methodology, or collaborations? Get in touch with the team behind the Mediterranean Heat Waves Monitoring Service.

Background

This service originated as a contribution to the MEDOSMOSIS, SHAREMED, and MPA-Engage Interreg MED projects, with the goal of providing open, daily information on sea surface temperature anomalies and marine heat wave events across the Mediterranean basin.

Daily MHW reports are generated and maintained by ICATMAR (Information System for the Catalan Maritime Action Plan) at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona. The underlying methodology is described in Martínez et al. (2023).

SST data are sourced from the Copernicus Marine Service (product SST_MED_SST_L4_NRT_OBSERVATIONS_010_004), spanning the reprocessed 1982–2021 record and the ongoing near-real-time stream.
